Four Darwin sailors have had an awesome adventure at the 2026 Australian ILCA Nationals on the challenging waters of Sandy Bay in Hobart, Tasmania.
After a year of preparation and fundraising, the team would like to say a big thank you to all the people who supported their efforts and helped make it all possible.
For sailors more accustomed to warm water and light breezes, Hobart delivered a true test. Cold temperatures and gusty winds ensured that every race demanded skill, focus, and Territorian grit. It actually snowed on Mount Wellington before and after the regatta!!!!
Representing the Darwin Sailing Club were Jeremy Atwell, Oliver Atwell, William McGrath, and Korin Lesh. They were supported by an enthusiastic and tireless shore crew of Stuart Atwell, Sharon Atwell, Doug Lesh, Peter Gibb, Bernie Gibb, Kira Lesh, and James McGrath. From boat preparation and logistics, to encouragement after long days on the water, the support team also played a crucial role in making games of Scrabble and Mario Kart competitive.

The racing itself was intense, with large fleets and tight competition across all divisions. Each sailor faced moments of challenge and breakthrough, with strong performances standing out across the series:
-
William competed in the very competitive ILCA 6 Gold Fleet, finishing 32nd overall, with a best race result of 7th place, an excellent achievement at national level. William also finished 10th in the U19 Mens division.

The hard work and support for our fundraising meant William and Korin could pay for professional coaching and support on the ILCA 6 course. This was critical to them getting a positive experience and maximising their performance and learning. Stuart and Doug were also able to hire a decent tinnie to provide similar support to Jeremy and Oliver on the ILCA 4 course.
While the sailors were on the water, the shore crew took the opportunity to go on hikes, do some thrift shopping, and even play a bit of golf. Other big highlights were watching the Sydney to Hobart boats coming through the finish line, playing scrabble on Kira’s homemade board, and seeing a wild platypus. Once again proving that sailing regattas are the best excuse for a holiday!
