Powerboat Handling Course

Powerboat Handling Course – Upskill for the Top End!

While a boat license isn't required in Darwin, being confident and prepared on the water is essential. The Powerboat Handling course is a great opportunity to upskill, whether you're supporting local sailing activities, working on the water, or just want to boost your boating knowledge.

This course focuses on practical skills for safe and effective boat handling in all conditions – covering engine operation, navigation, safety procedures, and more. There's a short online theory module to complete before a 1-day practical session on the water with a qualified instructor.

Perfect for anyone who wants to feel more capable and in control during any boating experience in the NT.

Course Overview

The Powerboat Handling (PBH) Certificate is achieved by completing two course components:

  1. Powerboat Program Essential Skills e-learning – The online theory course must be completed before attending this Powerboat Handling face-to-face course.

  1. Powerboat Handling face-to-face course – A one-day practical course focusing on boat handling, particularly in confined areas such as marinas and in challenging conditions like swell and waves. Participants will also gain a deeper understanding of engines, different types of craft, and navigation techniques during a passage.

Together, these components provide the knowledge and practical skills required to handle a powerboat safely and confidently.
In some instances, you can take your Powerboat Handling completion certificate to your State Maritime Regulator and gain the State Boat License.

Who should complete this course?

This course is designed for participants to develop their practical powerboat driving skills. Attaining this course is a component to the PBH certificate and that is also a requirement for becoming a Powerboat, Dinghy and/or Windsurfing Instructor.

Course Outcome

You will gain your Powerboat Handling completion certificate.
