We are excited to share the success of our new program: First Mates - Free Sailing for Veterans, Defence & their Families, designed to give those involved in the military a taste of life on the water at Darwin Sailing Club.
On Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 4 PM to 8 PM, we welcome keen participants eager to learn the ropes on our RS Quests. Each week, 19 participants join us and learn to sail! Guided by our experienced instructors they are introduced to the fundamentals of sailing; from steering and trimming sails to working as a crew. Even after just a couple of sessions, the progress has been inspiring, with participants quickly gaining confidence and teamwork skills on the water.
The evening doesn’t end when the boats come ashore. At 6 PM, Donny’s Den opens for sunset drinks and a classic Aussie BBQ. This social side of First Mates has become just as important as the sailing itself, giving new sailors the chance to relax, share stories, and connect with our wider club community.
First Mates is all about making sailing accessible, fun, and social; and it’s proving to be a fantastic way to welcome newcomers into the sport.
Club Members and avid sailors are encouraged to join us for a Free BBQ, to socialise with our veteran sailors and welcome them to the sailing community! Check out the details here to find out when the next session is!
We can’t wait to see you on the water and at Donny’s Den for another great season of sailing and friendship at Darwin Sailing Club!
